Katie Loveday shares her IIC Internship Experience
Friday, April 27th, 2012
My name Katie Loveday, and I am a Juior English Major at UTK. When I interviewed with Kim Olen in January, I was looking for an opportunity to gain experience and build my resume. Although an Insurance Company was not at the top of my list, I am very thankful that I didn’t let that deter me from coming to intern at IIC.
I started my internship in January and during my time here, I completed projects that were applicable to my field and some that helped me branch out and build new skills. Writing is my passion, and when I told Kim that, she gave me projects that I would allow me to put that skill to use. For example, I wrote multiple articles for IIC’s blog and even conducted an interview with the company’s owner, Blake McCoy, for an interview piece.
Kim is a firm believer on helping her interns build their resumes and gain valuable real world experience. My position here also allowed me to learn a lot about marketing, event planning, creating websites, and managing social media. Before starting this internship, I knew nothing about any of these things. Now when I apply for jobs after I graduate next May, I have an impressive and varied portfolio to present to prospective employers.
The environment at the office is ideal. You probably could not find a more relaxed, fun office to intern at. I am a full time student and also have a very busy personal life, so I expected time conflicts to be an issue when I started interning. However, Kim understood school and personal obligations and was willing to work with my schedule. In fact, I have considered trying a part time position as an insurance agent next semester so that I can make money while still retaining a flexible schedule.
There are many reasons why I am extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to intern here at Independent Insurance Consultants. Not only did I gain valuable experience and build my resume, the position also opened my eyes to a new career possibility that I had never considered before. Plus, I got to meet and work with some very nice, helpful professionals.
